Live Event: Sarah Richardson and Keolu Fox, “Unscripted: Candid Conversations About the Future of Research”

Can science be more open? How do we break through biases to create better knowledge? How can researchers use local wisdom and lived experience to advance health equity? This Friday, Dr. Sarah Richardson of the GenderSci Lab will be diving into this important question alongside Dr. Keolu Fox from UC San Diego during a live discussion on RWJF’s channel.

As part of RWJF’s “Unscripted: Candid Conversations About the Future of Research” series, a set of daily conversations with six thinkers that will pair up and talk to each other about rethinking the way society produces, collects, shares, and uses knowledge about health, Dr. Fox and Dr. Richardson will discuss how research practices can evolve to better serve marginalized communities and keep health equity at the forefront.

Keolu Fox, Assistant Professor at University of California, San Diego, Principal Investigator of the Indigenous Futures Institute, and Adjunct Investigator at the J Craig Venter Institute, will be interviewing Sarah Richardson during this conversation. His work focuses on advancing Indigenous data sovereignty, which is “the idea that our community should decide if, when, and how data about us is collected, shared, and used.” Dr. Fox addresses questions around functionalizing genomics, testing theories of natural selection by editing genes and determining the functions of mutations. His advocacy for the inclusion of indigenous populations in genomics and data sovereignty is closely aligned with Dr. Richardson’s focus in the GenderSci Lab, which works to advance the intersectional study of gender in the biomedical and allied sciences, counter bias and hype in sex difference research, and enhance public discourse surrounding the sciences of sex and gender.

Both of these scholars challenge traditional scientific practices that marginalize certain groups, and are concerned with how identities are constructed, studied, and interpreted within the scientific community. Dr. Fox and Dr. Richardson will discuss their work to shift the culture of research, making it more collaborative, and open to and inclusive of more voices.

Join them live at 3 p.m. ET on Friday, October 25, 2024 for a rich discussion on inclusive research models, and don’t forget to bring your questions!
